Pain. Everyone experiences it at some point or the other in their life. For some its a case of occasional pain while for others its chronic with them having to live/have lived with it for years. Since being diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis some years back, I have experienced fatigue, joint stiffness and pain on an intermittent basis with the pain varying in its degree of intensity. And over the years, I have now learnt to manage the pain. I take prescription pain relief tablets on occasions of severe pain but prefer to manage mild pain with physical therapy (pain-relief exercises) and non-pill formulations like creams, gels or ointments.

In today's post, I share with you 5 non-pill pain relief products that can help with pain management.

Non pill pain relief products

Atrogel – Arnica gel for muscle and joint pain

This is a herbal remedy from A.Vogel used for pain relief in stiff muscles and joints. Made with extracts of freshly harvested Arnica flowers, the gel has a non-greasy texture and is easy to apply.

According to the makers

it can be used to relieve pain in conditions such as muscle aches or pains, stiffness or after sporting injuries.

Arnica has long been used in traditional remedies mostly for treating bruises but it works for pain relief as well. And it can be used alongside other traditional painkillers.

Actimas - Celafen Muscle & Joint Rub

Another drug-free treatment for stiff joints is the Celafen cream. It contains Celafen, a natural product that works by lubricating the cell membranes and repelling inflammatory chemicals responsible for the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Celafen contains a clinically tested patented ingredient called celadrin which is a complex of esterified fatty acids. According to the makers

the cream has been shown in published research to deliver effective pain relief to stiff, painful or arthritic joints within just 30 minutes, making it 15% faster than conventional painkillers.

The cream has a smooth, non-greasy texture and is easy to apply. I find that it works well, both on my affected finger joints and my knees but I have noticed that the relief is quicker on the smaller joints (finger joints). A 50ml tube of Celafen is priced at £9.99 and can be purchased from www.skinshop.co.uk

The final product in the roundup is a topical gel application but it contains two active painkilling ingredients:

- Ibuprofen : an NSAID that reduces pain and inflammation &

So, please talk to your GP or a healthcare professional before using this product. The Deep Relief Anti-inflammatory Gel is recommended for the effective relief from back pain, rheumatic pain, muscular aches, pains and swellings such as strains, sprains and sport injuries. 5. I've used Tiger Balm on muscle aches and find it works well. Also, many years ago I was given a Chinese medicine called Pak Fah Yeow to use on my migraines. You rub a couple of drops into your temples. It can be effective if you use it at the beginning when the migraine has not really taken hold. I now make sure I always have a bottle at home, it is easily found in any Chinese / East Asian grocery store.
