Advancements in shaving technology over the past few years means that electric shavers have improved a lot in terms of performance. However the choice between razors or electric shavers comes down to personal preference, the convenience and the price. Mr.H moved to electric shavers many years back and only very occasionally opts for the traditional razor shave. He finds electric shavers more comfortable to use and his skin seems to prefer it too. Braun is a brand he prefers and we were lucky enough to be sent one of the models from Braun Series 7 to trial. Having been using it for more than a month, Mr.H is ready with views on the electric shaver. So, over to him.

Let me begin by saying that the Braun Series 7 790 cc-4 is the most efficient and high quality shaver I have used till date. It is one of the best offerings from Braun. The most important aspect of the 790 cc is the closeness of shave it delivers. I have used other electric shavers from Braun (older models) but none of them match the 790 cc. This Series 7 model won me over instantly with the close, smooth shave it offers. There are other features as well that I like.

First, the Intelligent Sonic Technology that the shaver makes use of. With 10,000 micro-vibrations per minute, this technology captures more hairs with every stroke. The shaver also adapts to the density of your beard. Second, the OptiFoil used in the shaver protects the skin from irritation and gives perfect control and precision. The foil is what gives a close and comfortable shave. Third, the ActiveLift middle trimmer which helps lift and capture even small and flat-lying hair. This feature handles difficult areas like the neck and jawline. The Jawline has always been a problem area for me, but the 790 cc-4 gives excellent results even in that area. Even tiny hair that are lying flat, close to the skin are easily picked up and cut. The precision and the contour adapting features of the shaver make shaving such an easy job.

The 790 cc model lacks the wet shaving option. If you prefer to have a Wet & Dry shaver you can opt for the 799 cc model that has wet shave capability as well.

Some of the key features of the 790 cc that I like are:
- The fully pivoting head which offers more skin contact and greater adaptability to facial contours.
- Picks up and cuts even the tiniest of hair giving a smooth, close shave with minimal zero skin irritation.
- Ergonomic design that is comfortable to hold and doesn't slip.
- Handles problem areas very well - no nicks or cuts.
- The ability to personalise the shaver based on your skin and beard type.
- Rechargeable or mains operation.

Clean and Charge Station

The Series 7 790 cc comes with a alcohol-based Clean & Charge Station. This cleaning station automatically cleans and lubricates the shaver. All you need to do is simply place the shaver in its slot in the cleaning station and press the button to begin the cleaning process. I normally brush the shaver head and run it under the tap before placing it in the cleaning dock. This gets rid of some of the debris and the cleaning station will not end up collecting all the dirt/debris. The station shows how clean your shaver is and the level of the cleaning fluid. Depending on the hygiene level, the cleaning station will choose the type of cleaning - short economical cleaning, normal cleaning or high intensive cleaning. While the cleaning process is on, the station will automatically charge the shaver if required.

My only gripe is how bulky the cleaning station is. It would not be possible to carry this when I travel. And you also need to factor in the need to replace the cleaning solution every 8 weeks. A pack of three refill cartridges cost around £13 on Amazon. Having said that, the shaver head smells fresh and is very hygienically cleaned once the cleaning process is done. While travelling, I manually clean the shaver using the brush and then rinsing it under hot running water. While this does not clean as well as the station does, it is the alternative way to keep the shaver clean especially while travelling.

The charging takes around 1 hour (for a full charge) and the battery lasts for around 50 minutes. You can either charge it in the station or use the smart plug and directly charge from the mains.

Overall, this is a shaver that I like a lot. It is powerful, efficient and delivers a close, smooth shave.

  1. My father prefers the old-school razors, but the cleaning and charging stand with this one sounds great!
