A lot of reviews of Popchips have popped up(no pun intended) on the blogosphere recently. And all this excited chatter got me interested as well. So what are Popchips? Popchips are potato chips that are not baked or fried but rather popped like popcorn. These yummy little discs of potatoes come in a range of seasoning in 23gm packs each with less than 100 calories. Packed with lot of flavour the makers claim that each serving of Popchips has less than half the fat of fried crisps. Interesting. I had to try them out myself and share it with you guys. I spoke to the Popchips team and they very kindly sent me a box with a selection of flavours to try.

I was sent 5 flavours to try out - Original, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Barbeque, Sour Cream & Onion and Salt & Pepper. Mr.H and myself started off with the Original to get an idea of the basic chips without any flavours added. The first thing we noticed was the texture - they are puffy and crunchy with a good 'potato-ey' taste as you would expect. They are different from fried or baked chips both in terms of texture and taste. We thoroughly enjoyed the crunchy snack. Now that we had tried the 'Original', it was time to move onto the flavoured ones. The Sour Cream & Onion was spot on in terms of flavour - creamy and not too salty. The Salt & Pepper variant was an absolute favourite. What a perfect blend of flavours - just one bite and we knew this was going to be a winner. The peppery taste was perfect - just like freshly ground black pepper. Needless to say this pack didn't last long. Now here I must mention a point. Along with the packs of chips, Popchips also had sent across a chip clip to keep opened packs fresh. Seriously!? With awesome flavours like these, did they think we needed a chip clip? There was no way we were going to leave an opened pack for later use :)

The Barbeque flavour one was slightly sweet and smokey just like you would expect. The Sea Salt & Vinegar combination was good as well - salty with an acidic taste. But, both Mr. H and me are not fans of Vinegar taste and as such this was the last one on our favourites list. However, if you like the traditional salt and vinegar combo then you will enjoy these.

Overall, Popchips were a winner at DB Reviews. We enjoyed the light crunchy texture and the natural seasoning. Popchips do not use any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. They also do not make use of hydrogenated oils or MSG making it a good snacking option. Want to try them? You can order them online from Ocado or you can check the list of retailers here.
