Travelling with your dog

Collaborative content

Travelling with your dog is so much fun, but there can be times where it’s a little stressful, especially if you’re on a stopover. Stopovers or layovers are those in-between flights or times where you have to wait around for visas etc. and it can be quite a tiring and uninteresting time. If you’re traveling with your pet, then it will also be the same for them.

However, it doesn’t have to be! Take a look at some of these ideas to keep you and your furry friend entertained during these times.

1. Go for a little walk

If you’ve been traveling for a while, then your pooch will typically need a toilet break. Some travel layovers have specific areas to take your dog for a walk, or you may be able to leave the area for a more extended break. This not only helps your dog stretch their legs; you’ll feel a little more refreshed too.

2. Take some time to chill

Whether you have a few hours to wait or are staying overnight until your next stint in the air or road, take some time to chill. Traveling is tiring for everyone, and just enjoying some quiet time and relaxing could be a great idea. Most places have Wi-Fi, so you could check out some online games or pop onto Unibet casino to place a little wager of your favourites. There’s also the option of delving into a good book while your furry friend has a nap.

3. Grooming and massage

Naturally, some pets become stressed when traveling or new places. To help them settle, why not try grooming or massaging them as this can help to calm them. Most dogs love being brushed as it feels relaxing and soothing. This is also a great way to keep on top of grooming your pet may shed a little more if they are nervous.

4. Don’t pack all the dog toys

To keep your dog occupied during a stopover, don’t pack all the toys away. If they have a favourite, it keeps it available for those times when they start to become restless. Whether it’s a ball, chew toy, or a cuddly teddy, it can help to calm nerves and is the perfect distraction, especially if you have a curious and active doggie.

5. Learn something new

Dogs love attention and none more so when they’re learning something new. If you have a few hours to spare, why not try learning some new tricks. Stopovers can be significant distractions for dogs due to the number of people around and things going on, so using this time to take their mind off, it is ideal. Start with small gestures such as paw or rollover and then reward them during the training.

Layovers can be boring for both people and pets. If you are traveling through an airport, you may not be able to take your dog out of the carrier, but there are usually spots outside to give your dog some fresh air.
