Fertility is a sensitive subject, perhaps due to its complexity or maybe because it affects so many of us. Usually, with regular unprotected sex, couples should be able to conceive a child naturally within one year of trying. However, 1 in 6 couples are affected by infertility and end up turning to IVF treatment for help. Lots of single women also turn to IVF clinics to preserve their fertility if they’re not ready to have a baby yet, as their fertility starts to rapidly decline after the age of 35.

There are lots of reasons why a couple might struggle to conceive naturally. Most of the time it is down to age, but lifestyle choices are also often to blame, such as smoking or an unhealthy BMI. Roughly 30% of the time, infertility is due to the male, despite the popular misconception that it is a woman’s issue. With all of this information in mind, you may feel the need to get to know your own fertility a little better, especially if you want to become a parent one day.

The more that society understands fertility, the easier it will become to break the taboo, which may help those that are currently suffering in silence. What’s more, many people might start to make appropriate lifestyle changes to help increase their ability to conceive. The following infographic might help get you started on your path to understanding fertility.
