Donnerberg Neck and Shoulder Shiatsu Massager

Modern lifestyle is hectic. There is some or the other stress affecting everyone. And with stress comes all sorts of health disorders. I have inflammatory arthritis and coupled with the long hours I spend at the desk, I am frequently plagued with neck and back pain and overall joint stiffness. Actually, most of the population worldwide experiences neck pain or shoulder stiffness at some point in their lives. Stress is not the only cause. It could be poor posture, imbalance in the bodily systems or wear and tear with age. Getting a regular professional massage is not possible or feasible on a daily basis and so the emergence of personal massage devices has not been a surprise. It is a growing market with new kinds of massagers being launched ever so frequently.

HoMedics Shiatsu Max 2.0 Back and Shoulder Massager with Heat

A couple of years back I was introduced to HoMedics who sell a range of personal health and wellness products. HoMedics are popular for their range of home massage products and have been a leading innovator in massage technology. Their wellness range includes humidifiers, sleep aids, fitness monitors etc. I have used their Shiatsu cushion and it has served me well. So, my impression of the brand has been positive. A few months back I had the opportunity to trial the Shiatsu Max 2.0 Back and Shoulder Massager with Heat. And I readily took up the chance. I have always suffered from neck and back problems (it runs in the family) and use different kinds of massagers. I have hand-held massagers, a mini travel one (which my aunt got from the USA) and the Homedics Shiatsu cushion. The Shiatsu Max 2.0 felt like the perfect progression in the line of massagers I have. It promised to deliver a more intense massage experience for the back and it certainly did.

Lava Shell Massage in the Comfort of One's Own Home? Yes, Please!

I have blogged earlier about Lava Shell massage which is a one of its kind innovation in warming spa therapies. Details of the massage and my experience with it, at Tessa Stevens, can be found here. The results of the massage were impressive and I had come back from the beauty clinic feeling very relaxed and amazing. Shared Beauty Secrets have now come out with a new Lava Shell Homecare Kit which they claim is the ultimate at home pampering. I was intrigued about this new kit. Would it offer the same experience and benefits as the salon massage? Would it work in the hands of a novice massager like me? I had many questions and felt that I needed to give the homecare kit a try. And give it a try, I did. So, what does the kit contain and how does it work? Let's take a look at it.

Lava Shell Homecare Kit

Lava Shells are the world’s first self-heating massage tool and the new homecare kit allows you to experience the Lava Shell treatment in the comforts of your own home. The homecare kit comes packaged in a very lovely, natural woven bag and contains the following:
- 1 porcelain Lava Shell,
- A 30ml bottle of Basic Elements Exotic Massage Oil,
- 4 Lava Gel sachets,
- 4 Lava Activators and
- An instruction leaflet on how to activate and use the Lava shell.

When I received the kit, I decided that I wanted to try it out both as a receiver and as a massager. So I enlisted the help of dear Mr.H, who agreed to help with the review provided there were no photographs of him receiving the massage, on the public domain :) I set up the room - dim lights, soft and soothing music playing in the background and the Lava Shell kit ready for use. The kit as I mentioned earlier comes an instruction leaflet which clearly lists out the steps to prep the Lava Shell for use.

1. Remove the Lava Gel sachet from the packaging and gently place it inside the shell. Flatten the sachet against the bottom of the shell using your fingers.
2. Open the Lava Activator package and pour the entire contents into the shell.
3. Set the shell aside and wait for around 5 minutes for the Activator liquid to be absorbed. Place the cap back on the shell.

Once activated the shells take between 5-10 minutes to heat up and then it will continue to generate heat for up to an hour. As you use the shell to massage, it transfers heat to the body thus balancing the temperature. If you feel that the heat levels are going down, you can set aside the shell for a few minutes and once rested it will begin to increase in temperature. Conversely, if you find the Lava Shell becoming too hot, you can cool it down by using a damp cold flannel to wipe the shell.

The heat from the shell is excellent at helping muscles relax. The shape of the shell ensures that you can easily target problem areas like tense shoulders. The porcelain shell feels beautifully smooth on the skin and is apt for massaging abdomen, back, legs, shoulders and neck. The combination of heat and massage helps ease muscle tension, stiffness and knots. Since I had already experienced a Lava Shell massage, I knew what to expect. But Mr.H who was trying it for the first time was quite surprised. He quite enjoyed the warm massage as it eased his stiff shoulders effectively. The massage oil provided with the kit has a very exotic fragrance and added to the overall appeal. It also enables the Lava Shell to move smoothly on the skin while massaging.

The Lava Shell homecare kit scores well on the concept front and in terms of ease of use. There are 2 aspects that I would love Shared Beauty Secrets to consider though. First - providing two Lava Shells in each kit as opposed to one. I remember when I had the massage at the beauty clinic, the masseuse used two shells and both her hands to massage. I felt that using two shells had provided a more effective massage. Second - If there was a way to choose the 'strength' of the Lava Gel, that would be excellent. I noticed that the 4 Lava Gel sachets in my kit were marked as a 'Mild Blend'. I guess this reflects the degree of heat that the shell will provide upon activation. If the 4 sachets in each kit are of different blends, that would be a lovely experience. Having said that, the 'Mild Blend' was good and it did provide a warm experience.

Cleaning the Lava shell is very easy. You can wash it with hot soapy water or simply wipe clean with an anti-bacterial wipe and store it in the bag until the next use.

To sum it up, I really enjoyed the Lava Shell Homecare Kit. If you love massages and heat treatments and would like to experience it in the comfort of your own home, then this kit is a good choice. Since Lava Shells are self-heating, you require no electricity for the heat massage. The kit comes with clear instructions, is easy to use and does provide a heavenly home massage. The kit would be an excellent choice as an indulgent present for your partner.

The Lava Shells Homecare Kit costs £39.50, while the Refill Kit is priced at £29.50. Both the items can be purchased online at www.sharedbeautysecrets.com

Soothe Tired, Achy Muscles with the HoMedics Shiatsu Cushion

HoMedics are a well known name in the personal health and wellness products domain. They invest in the latest technological advances bringing to us a range of innovative personal well-being products. I am sure you must have heard of, seen or used one of their massagers. I recently had the opportunity to try out the HoMedics Shiatsu Cushion - a compact massager that offers reverse action Shiatsu massage along with circular thumb action.

The HoMedics Shiatsu Cushion

The HoMedics Shiatsu Cushion has a compact design with adjustable rear straps with which you can secure it to most chairs. Because of its size the cushion is easily portable as well. The cushion comes with an integrated remote control and decently long power cord, so you don't have to sit very near to the plug point :) Operating it is very simple. Plug the adaptor into the mains outlet and press the 'Power' button on the remote. To activate the Shiatsu massage press one of the 'Shiatsu' buttons. Pressing the other button will reverse the direction of massage. If you wish to activate heat with the massage, press the heat button at the top of the remote.

The design is such that you can use the massaging mechanism to target your shoulders, lumbar area, back or even legs. The reverse action shiatsu massage mechanism combined with the soothing heat treatment helps ease muscular tension or stiffness. Though the heat is not too hot(which I have noticed is the case with most such massagers), it does give a moderate warming sensation which coupled with the kneading massage offers good relief. When the heat option is turned on, the massage heads will glow red. You can flip back the flap for a more intense massage - I always do that.

The HoMedics Shiatsu Cushion

When you are using the massager, you need to ensure that you do not exert too much force against the pillow. This is so that you do not injure yourself and also to ensure that the massaging mechanism is not damaged. The effect of the massage is so brilliant that it is easy to get carried away and keep using the cushion for long periods of time. And that is why HoMedics have set a 15 minute auto shutoff feature on the unit to ensure the user's safety. The product comes with an instruction manual which lists all the safety cautions and maintenance aspects as well.

This Shiatsu cushion has been with me for a few weeks now and I am so very pleased with the results. The lower back pain and upper leg pain that I get during my periods is better managed now because of the Shiatsu cushion. The tension spots on my shoulders have also improved because of the regular massage sessions. Overall, I love the HoMedics Shiatsu Cushion a lot and cannot recommend the product enough. If you suffer from tension in the shoulders or experience frequent backache(which most of us would experience at some point in our lives) then I strongly suggest that you give this Shiatsu cushion a go. It is priced at £54.99 and available to buy online at www.homedics.co.uk

Scholl Muscle Therapy Percussion Massager, A Review

Scholl have been around for more than 100 years offering a range of products in the area of foot health and well being. They are a brand I have purchased products from earlier and know that as a company they have an in-depth understanding of health and well being. So, when the opportunity arose to trial the Scholl Muscle Therapy Percussion Massager, I happily took up the chance.

Scholl Muscle Therapy Percussion Massager

Scholl Muscle Therapy Percussion Massager is a 2-in-1 massager that includes dual action massage node and three intensity settings. The massager can be used for common complaints like aching backs, legs and shoulders. The three different heads that come with the massager can be used as follows:
- Infra-red node to soothe aching muscles,
- Reflexology node for a relaxing massage and
- Percussion node for deep tissue massage.
The interchangeable heads are easy to remove and fix. And the intensity can be adjusted using a sliding button the side of the main unit. The massager has a smooth elongated handle; perfect for those hard-to-reach places. You can also detach the main unit(the head) from the handle and opt for the soft comfort grip handle. You can use this for targeting specific muscle points.

We have been using the massager for some time now and it has been a good test run, I should say. I like the intensity adjustment feature and the infra red heat node which provides both massage and heat to the target area. The infrared node doesn't become very hot but does get warm enough that you can feel an impact. The massager feels a bit heavy to hold and a little more so when I have my RA flare-up. But Mr.H has taken on the role of a masseur and gives me a 10 minute massage session every other day. The massager helps to ease muscle tension and gives a very relaxing massage. One point I should mention here is that the massager has quite some power - it gives a strong vibration which means it works on hard knots on the back. But it can be a bit uncomfortable if you are frail. So, please find the right speed/intensity setting before using. One change that I would like to see in the massager is replacing the reflexology node with a rubberised model(a softer version) which would make it more comfortable to use. But overall, I like the Scholl Muscle Therapy Percussion Massager. It is sturdy and well-built, much powerful than it looks and is good value for money. If you suffer from frequent back or shoulder ache, you could give this massager a try.

Priced at RRP £39.99, the Scholl Muscle Therapy Percussion Massager is available from Debenhams, Argos and Amazon.

Lava Shells Massage at Tessa Stevens

So many things had been going on simultaneously over the past 3-4 weeks that I was looking and feeling absolutely knackered. I was tired and my skin was not at its best. And then came the opportunity to experience Lava Shells Treatment at Tessa Stevens. Shared Beauty Secrets who are the UKs exclusive distributor of Lava Shells launched the massage in the UK in 2009. Since then the popularity of Lava Shells Massage has grown considerably and the treatment can now be found in most leading spas and beauty salons across UK. The opportunity to try out this massage could not have come at a better time! A massage treatment was exactly what I needed after a hectic and stressful few weeks. And did it do the trick? Read on to learn more about the Lava Shell Massage and my experience with it.

My appointment for the Lava Shell Massage was at 10:00am at the Tessa Stevens branch in Enfield. For those of you who haven't heard of Tessa Stevens, they are a health and beauty clinic with 2 branches - one in Enfield and the other in Winchmore Hill. They are a member of IIAA and BABTAC. The clinic offers many different types of massage and body treatments and the Lava Shell Massage is one of them.

As I entered the clinic I was greeted with a friendly smile by the team in the reception and since this was my first visit to Tessa Stevens, I was asked to fill out a form. I was then met by Alex, my therapist for the treatment, who led me to the treatment room. She chatted to me a bit about the Lava Shells Massage and explained what I could expect from the massage session. Alex made me feel so much at ease that I began to relax before the treatment actually started :) Since it was going to be a full body massage I had to take my clothes off leaving just my knickers on. I then had to lie down on the massage bed. Alex came into the room after a while. The lights were turned off(there were some lovely twinkling lights on the ceiling though) and a soothing music was playing in the background. With everything in place Alex began the massage.

What is Lava Shells Massage?

The Lava Shell Massage is a one of its kind innovation in warming spa therapies. The massage relaxes you whilst easing muscle and joint aches and pains. The star of the treatment is the Lava Shell - the world’s first self heating massage tool. The massage therapy uses 100% genuine recycled Tiger Clam Shells from the South Pacific. These shells heat up internally for up to an hour with a patented combination of natural minerals and water. Lava Shells can be up to 12 times hotter than hot stones and also score better than the hot stones on the hygiene front. The reason being the shells are non-porous and so they do not absorb skin cells or bacteria etc.

The massage was amazing and much impressive than I had imagined or expected. As Alex worked away on sections of my body with the warm and smooth shells I could literally feel that part of the body relaxing and becoming stress free. I loved the feel of the shells on the body and also the lovely warm heat that it releases. Alex worked the shells on my arms, back and legs focussing the massage on the surrounding pressure points. The shells which are heated using LavaGel generate enough heat to stimulate the blood supply resulting in healthier looking skin. The deep tissue pressure point massage also eases away muscle tension. The whole body massage also included a tummy massage.  The heat and the massage on the tummy area stimulates circulation and peristalsis. This helps remove internal blockages and provides relief from bloating, discomfort and/or IBS.

The massage lasted for a good 1.5 hours and after that Alex left me in the room allowing me some time to relax before I could get ready. As I lay in the bed, I could feel my entire body relax and well rested - there were no knots or tensions in any muscles. It was like my body had been rejuvenated. My lower back and my knees - both of which are problem areas - felt so much better. I could definitely feel the immediate results. Alex had mentioned that the massage is detoxifying and the effects would last for a few days. And she was right, 2 days after the massage and my body still felt much better than it normally does. If you love the feeling of heat on your body, then this treatment is for you. You should try it.

You can check out the Tessa Stevens Health & Beauty Clinics website for their clinic opening times and addresses. If you are based in the Enfield area and are able to visit Tessa Stevens, then I highly recommend Alex as the massage therapist. She is one of the senior staff at the clinic and is absolutely amazing.

Shared Beauty Secrets who are the exclusive UK and Ireland Lava Shells® distributors also offer many different therapeutic treatments using heat and ice. Some of them are:
- Lava Rescue - Great for muscle aches
- Glacial Shells Detox - A must for detoxifying
- Lava Shell Therma Facial - Ideal for skin radiance
- Lava Relax – The ultimate calming experience

You can read more about the different types of treatments here. You can also check with them regarding Lava Shells Massage practioners local to your area.

Final word: The Lava Shells Massage at Tessa Stevens was an amazing experience. I have no hesitation in recommending both the clinic and the Lava Shells treatment.
