Kinetica Protein Deluxe Bars - Ideal Between Workouts Or On The Go

Whatever kind of diet you follow, I am sure each one of you care about your health and must be working towards a healthy weight and muscle mass. Both myself and Mr.H have incorporated some changes in our diet and have started with an exercise regime. Being vegetarians, getting enough protein just through our natural diet is often difficult. So, in addition to consuming protein from natural sources like lentils, green peas, black beans, oatmeal, spinach etc., we  have also included protein bars and shakes into our routine.

The key factors that I look at while choosing a protein bar is not just the nutritional value but also the taste and texture of the bar. The new Kinetica Protein Deluxe Bar (which we were introduced to recently) ticks all the right boxes.

bkr - Not Just a Water Bottle But a Stylish Accessory Too

One of my new found loves is the bkr water bottle. The bottle is made of sturdy glass and comes with a silicone sleeve. It looks beautiful and elegant, is the perfect size for travel, doesn't leak and unlike plastic doesn't seep chemicals into the water. The bottles are BPA and Phthalate-free. After having used the bottle for a few weeks here is what I feel about it.

Vitamins and Minerals - How to Get What Your Body Needs?

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that play a very important part in your overall heath. They perform a number of roles in the body and you need to get them in the right amounts to ensure normal cell function and development. Our body cannot produce all these nutrients on its own and gets them from the food we eat. Normally we can get all these essential nutrients by eating a healthy balanced diet. For e.g. Vitamin C is found in Citrus fruits, Strawberries and Brussels sprouts while Vitamin B2 can be found in dairy products and green leafy vegetables. However, some of us need to take vitamin supplements for a variety of reasons - older adults who may have deficiency of certain vitamins, pregnant women, people with dietary restrictions or those whose bodies are unable to absorb nutrients from food. And that is where vitamin supplements come into picture.

Vitamin supplements normally come in tablet or capsule form. But in recent years oral vitamin sprays have made an appearance. If you do not like swallowing pills or if taking pills causes a stomach upset, then these oral sprays are just the solution for you.

A while back I was sent some vitamin oral sprays from BetterYou to try. You might have read my review of BetterYou's Magnesium Oil sprays earlier. I had loved the Magnesium sprays and was looking forward to sampling these vitamin sprays. So, without further ado, onto the sprays I received and my thoughts on them.

Breathe Easier and Sleep Better With The Nutri Derma Organic Airways Spray

When you are not feeling well, all you want is a good nights sleep. But if you have a stuffy or congested nose then breathing becomes difficult and this in turn makes sleeping difficult. A hot shower before bed followed by a cup of Ginger tea helps to reduce the congestion and get some sleep. And recently I have found that the Organic Airways spray from Nutri Derma works well too. It helps in relieving congestion and creates a relaxing feeling allowing you to sleep better.

Puressentiel Purifying Air Spray With 41 Essential Oils

A fabulous find for September has been the Puressentiel Purifying Air Spray.

Puressentiel Purifying Air Spray With 41 Essential Oils

With the colder months approaching and with the fear of catching infections (thanks to an acquired immunodeficient body) I was intrigued when this air spray bottle from Puressentiel arrived. I welcome anything that helps to ward off or fight infections as I need every little help that I can get to stay healthy. The air spray claims to help get rid of bacteria, viruses, microscopic fungi and unpleasant odours. The description on the box and the list of ingredients were impressive and I felt that the spray would be good to use as an air sanitizer.

The Purifying Air Spray from Puressentiel is a 100% natural product which combines 41 essential oils providing bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal and insect-repellent properties. The product needs to be sprayed in the air - 6 to 8 sprays each time. You can spray it on bedding and carpets as well.

Puressentiel Purifying Air Spray With 41 Essential Oils

Ingredients: Dill, Anise, sweet Basil, Bay St Thomas, Rosewood, Cajuput, cassia Cinnamon, Atlas Cedarwood, Lemon, Lemon Verbena, Cumin Seed, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Juniper, Geranium, Ginger, Clove, English Lavender, Lavandin grosso, Mace, Mandarin, Wild Marjoram, Melissa, Curled Leaf Mint, Peppermint, Myrrh, Niaouli, Orange, Oregano, Parsley, Petitgrain, Scotchpine, Rosemary, Savory, Sage, Wild Thyme, Tea tree, Thyme, Vervain, and Wintergreen.

There were two aspects that this spray had to deliver on - fragrance and efficiency. Let me tell you about the fragrance first. The smell is absolutely amazing - fresh and clean. It is a mix of various essential oils, so you can imagine the strength and the natural aspect of the fragrance. The spray has the effect of an aromatherapy roll-on - the scent making you feel alert and refreshed. Whenever I use the air spray, I feel the air actually becomes/smells cleaner and that I can breathe more easily. Even Mr.H loves this invigorating scent. Full marks on the fragrance front.

Now let's move on to the efficiency. This one is tricky to gauge. Honestly, there is no way to tell how effectively the spray limits the sources of allergies in the air, simply because you cannot see it. But having used aromatherapy products earlier (and one from Puressentiel themselves) and having seen their positive effect, I feel that this spray delivers as well. And if you want more convincing, then let me tell you that this purifying air spray is a patented formula with scientifically proven efficacy by nine different studies.

So, if you are looking for a 100% natural product that helps to sanitise and deodorise air; a product that is free from synthetic fragrances, preservatives and doesn't make use of propellant gas, then the Puressentiel Purifying Air Spray is an excellent choice. You can purchase it online at www.puressentiel.co.uk for £19.99.

I Love..'s New Range of Cleansing Hand Gels

At the beginning of 2015 I was introduced to I Love... who are a bath, body and beauty brand that make deliciously scented products. Earlier this year I also shared my views on their body butters and lip balms. Today I bring to you I Love..'s new range of Cleansing Hand Gels.

I Love..'s New Range of Cleansing Hand Gels

I have always liked the concept of sanitizers but have not been very regular using them. While a bottle always resides in my handbag and in the car, I normally forget using them. But now things have changed. I have been on immune-suppressant drugs for a while now. One of the side-effects of these drugs is that it makes me more vulnerable to infections - infections that in a normal scenario my body would have handled on its own. That's the trade-off of taking these drugs - it helps control/manage my arthritis but at the same time makes me more prone to infections. So, now I take extra care. I avoid going to very crowded places. I ensure that my home is kept very clean. But when I am out and about or travelling long distance, it becomes a bit difficult. It is impossible not to come in contact with people or to avoid crowded areas. And that is where hand sanitizers come in to the picture. They are an excellent way to help reduce the spread of infections by hand contact.

I Love..'s New Range of Cleansing Hand Gels

I Love..'s New Range of Cleansing Hand Gels

I Love...'s hand cleansing gels are quick drying and the anti-bacterial formula instantly cleanses while leaving the hands soft and moisturised.  It is non-sticky unlike some sanitizers that I have tried earlier and it also does not dry my hand. The scent lingers for a long time. As with all their other products, the cleansing gels come in four delicious flavours:
  • Raspberry and Blackberry
  • Mango and Papaya
  • Coconut and Cream
  • Strawberries and Cream
The cleansing gels come in travel sized bottles and are priced at £1.25 each making them a handbag staple. You can check out I Love...'s website for their entire product range shop.ilovecosmetics.eu

High Performance Vitamin C from Altrient

Vitamins and minerals are needed by our body in small amounts to function properly. While all vitamins are important as each one has a specific function, Vitamin C is one that takes the top spot in relation to skincare. Vitamin C not only helps to build your immune system but also is an great antioxidant that boosts healthy collagen production and helps restore your skin's natural moisture levels. Some research articles also say that it may assist in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

There are many modes of getting your required quota of Vitamin C - through food (fruits and vegetables), tablets, powder form (as in drink mixes), chewy pastilles and crystalline form. One recent form of Vitamin C supplement makes use of a natural Liposomal Encapsulated Delivery system to enable efficient transportation and absorption of the vitamin. According to Altrient, who make these high-performance nutritional supplements, Liposome Encapsulated Delivery (LED) is their proprietary dosing system that makes use of microscopic bubbles called liposomes to surround and protect the nutrient formulas from our bodies digestive juices and transporting it directly into the bloodstream for efficient absorption.

High Performance Vitamin C from Altrient

Altrient C by Livon is a 1,000mg Vitamin C supplement that comes packaged in a sachet form. The contents of the sachet have to be squeezed into around 60ml of water or juice and drank on an empty stomach at least 15 minutes before a meal. Because the vitamin is encapsulated in liposomes made from essential phospholipids, it will not dissolve. So, you will have a gel kind of bright orange liquid sitting at the bottom of the container. Mr.H who has trialled Altrient C, was initially not very keen on the texture and mode of consumption of the supplement. This could be down to the fact that the first couple of times he had it with fruit juice. Then he started consuming it in a shot glass with very little water. And just like a shot, you need to consume it real quick.

The past month, when Mr.H has been on Altrient C, he has had zero instances of cold or flu. But the main difference has been in his skin's elasticity. His skin feels more firm and even to touch as though it has been uniformly hydrated from the inside. Based on his experience he rates this product well; both in terms of the immune support it offers and also the skin benefits. One suggestion that he offers is to consume this supplement in the mornings as it tends to give an energy boost. Having it late in the evening means your body and mind will stay active making it difficult to fall asleep. The taste and texture may take a little while to get used to, but once you are comfortable having it like a shot, even that issue is sorted.

Altrient C

A box of Altrient C with 30 sachets costs around £29.95, making it expensive than other forms of Vitamin C supplements. But then according to the makers, it is the most bio-available oral form of Vitamin C available currently. It is a high strength supplement and gets absorbed optimally in the body.

If you would like to purchase Altrient C, you can do so here: www.abundanceandhealth.co.uk and if you would like to read more about the Liposome Encapsulated Delivery technology, you can do it here: www.altrient-europe.com

Note: As with the case of any type of supplement, please do consult your GP before you start taking any new vitamins or minerals. The review and opinions expressed in this post are based on my husband's experience and your experience may be different. Keep supplements and medicines away from the reach of children and always read the dosage instructions.

Supplement Focus : Healthspan's Vitamin B Complex and Chewable Vitamin C

Let's talk about vitamins today. Vitamins are essential for good health. However, they are not produced in our bodies, so we need to get them through our diet. A balanced diet usually provides our required vitamin quota, but this modern lifestyle of ours often leaves us lacking the necessary vitamins and minerals. And that is where supplements come into the picture.

Vitamin B complex which is a complex of eight B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12) is an essential vitamin that helps to maintain energy levels. It helps to reduce fatigue and research has shown that it may also help to reduce the risk of stroke. Each vitamin in the complex has its own health benefits. My paternal grandmother who is 88 now, has been taking Vitamin B Complex for nearly three decades now and attributes her energy levels to this supplement. You have to see her, to believe her energy levels at that age.

Most of us get our B vitamins from the food we eat. However as we age it makes sense to include supplements in our lifestyle to ensure that we are getting all the essential nutrients our body needs. Healthspan who have been manufacturing supplements and vitamins for a long time now are one of the most well known direct suppliers of vitamins in the UK.

Healthspan Vitamin B Complex and Chewable Vitamin C

Healthspan large range of vitamins and supplements includes different Vitamin B supplements. Vitamin B Complex with Folic Acid and Biotin is one of their offerings. My mom has tried these and has not experienced any side effects. She is an active person as is but has found that the supplement did improve her energy levels which is always a welcome effect. She has no trouble swallowing the tablets and takes the tablets around 4 times a week. Long term she plans to continue taking Vitamin B Complex and Healthspan would be her preferred choice. Based on her experience, she recommends the product.

Healthspan Vitamin B Complex and Chewable Vitamin C

My dad will be 70 soon and takes multivitamins regularly. He still works and has a busy schedule. He takes vitamin supplements as a preventive measure even though he consumes a varied and healthy diet. He regularly takes Vitamin C supplement in additon to multivitamins. Vitamin C has varied health benefits including supporting the immune system and the normal functioning of the nervous system. My dad has tried Vitamin C in tablet form, in powder form (which is mixed with water and consumed as a drink) but his favourite is the one in the chewable format. He loves the Vitamin C (with Bioflavonoids) tablets from Healthspan.

Here are the nutritional value details from Healthspan's website:

Reasonably priced both the products are quality products that come in sensible packaging. You can check these two and all other products from Healthspan on their website.

Biocera Alkaline Jug Filters

My family's health and well-being rank at the top of my priorities. As such I make sure that we are consuming the right type of food and drinks and that we are getting all the necessary nutrients that our bodies need. An adult human body contains an average of 65% water. Water is needed for a number of our bodily functions like transportation of nutrients, providing lubrication to joints and as a medium for excretion among other things. This makes water one of the top drinks that our body needs. It is something that all of us consume daily and so I started researching about it. I read a lot of research articles and posts about what tap water generally contains, what kind of water we should be consuming and how to filter water to derive maximum benefit from it. And I came across a lot of articles about consumption of alkaline water (with pH between 9-9.5). As with any research, there were two groups: one advocating the use of alkaline water and the other claiming it did nothing. I usually approach such scenarios with an open mind and decided to try drinking alkaline water for around 2 months to see if it made any difference.

Processes like Reverse Osmosis filtration, distillation and water ionizing methods are all expensive. I wanted something that was not only cost-effective but convenient as well and that is when I came across Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter. Biocera are a Korean brand who are experts in the use of natural bioceramics to enrich and purify drinking water. Their products are imported and distributed in the UK by Water for Health.

Biocera Alkaline Jug Filters

According to Biocera, the alkaline filter jug uses a combination of natural bioceramics to transform tap water; increasing its pH to anywhere between 9 and 9.5. The jug also:
  • Removes many harmful contaminants, including chlorine, benzene and a number of heavy metal compounds.
  • Releases activated hydrogen into the water, which improves the Oxidation-Reduction Potential of your water, and also help to neutralise a number of harmful oxygen free-radicals.
  • Alters the molecular structure of water making it more absorbable.
Also as per their website, the natural bioceramics used in the alkaline filter jug combine a range of essential trace minerals including zinc, magnesium and potassium, with activated carbon and a number of special anti-oxidant balls to enhance the pH of your water and remove potentially-harmful contaminants.

How to use the Biocera Alkaline Filter jug?

The alkaline water jug comes with 2 filters, with each filter cartridge lasting for approximately 350+ litres of filtered water before requiring replacement. In simple terms, each filter lasts around 2 months of average use. Assembly is very easy. Remove one of the filters from the packaging and immerse it in cold water for around 15 minutes. Once soaked place the cartridge in the compartment provided inside the jug. Now pour around two litres of water into the jug and discard it to remove any dust particles out of the filter. Now your jug filter is ready to use. Simply fill it water and enjoy the water.

Here is how the filter looks from the outside and inside.

Biocera Alkaline Jug Filters

If you are interested in reading detailed informaton on the composition of the jug filter, you can do so here.

The Biocera jug filter has a very comfortable grip and is very convenient to use. Refilling is easy and and you can even store it in your refrigerator should you wish to. There is an indicator on the lid to remind you of the day you need to change the cartridge on. Overall, the jug filter has a very modern and stylish design.

Biocera Alkaline Jug Filters

Before the arrival of the Biocera jug filter, we used to drink either tap water or bottled water. Now we only reach out to this filter jug. We have been using the jug filter for around 2 months now and I must say I have noticed a difference. First major difference I have noticed is the absence of as many stomach issues as I used to have earlier. Stomach cramps and bloating have been my weekly companions for as along as I can remember. In the past 2 months, their occurence has reduced. I also feel a little more energetic than usual which is another big plus as my body is mostly riddled with some or the other pain. I do not know if it is a placebo effect or whether it is the benefits of the jug filter, but drinking water from the Biocera filter jug has made a difference to me. Another point to note is that since the arrival of the jug, I have been focussed on drinking more water and refill the jug frequently. The extra hydration has definitely helped.

What I liked about the Biocera jug filter is that it does not require electricity and does not occupy much space. It looks very lovely on the kitchen counter or dining table. It does require manually filling up the water many times a day, but that is no big deal. I find that the Biocera jug is an easy way to enjoy filtered alkaline water. The replacement cartridges are a bit expensive but the benefits outweigh the price.

Drinking water is one the simplest and easiest things you can do to improve your levels of wellness. And this Biocera jug can help you with that by providing good alkaline water to hydrate your body. It also kind of motivates you to drink more water.

The Biocera jug (with 2 cartridges) costs £57.75. If you are interested in reading more about the filter jug or would like to purchase one, you can do so on the Water For Health website.

Do you drink tap water or do you use some kind of water filtration system in your home? Please share your comments below!

Iron Supplement Drink : Spatone Apple

Iron deficiency affects a majority of the population around the world. Iron deficiency anaemia accounts for most of the cases of anaemia and can be caused due to a variety of factors like:
- blood loss due to heavy menstrual bleeding,
- auto-immune disorders and other chronic conditions,
- shortage of iron in ones regular diet and
- prolonged use of NSAIDs.

I was found to be iron deficient (the first two factors are applicable in my case) and my GP prescribed iron supplement tablets to boost my iron levels. However, these tablets caused more bad than good. And I am not talking about diarrhea or black poo! I had side-effects ranging from nausea and stomach pain to light headedness whenever I took these tablets. Since I could not take them everyday without experiencing side-effects, I reduced the intake. But the problem persisted. I then stopped taking the tablets and made a lot of changes to my diet; trying to incorporate as many iron-rich vegetarian foods as I could - dark-green leafy vegetables, brown rice instead of the regular white rice, pulses and all kinds of beans. But I still had the issue of feeling lethargic and tired always. My chronic auto-immune condition is partly to blame for it, while iron deficiency is another cause.

A while back I came to know about Spatone, a naturally occurring iron-rich mineral water, which the makers claim is gentle on the stomach and easily assimilated. I had a chat with one of the lovely ladies from the Spatone team and I was sent some samples of Spatone Apple to try.

Spatone Apple is an apple flavoured version of Spatone's original formualtion with added vitamin C. It comes in convenient, one-a-day sachets, with each sachet providing you with your recommended daily amount of iron. The presence of Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron. Taste wise, the apple version tastes mildly like apple juice though I could taste the presence of iron as well (slightly metallic taste). I mix it with a glass of plain water and drink. I did not experience any stomach pain or nausea or dizziness when I was on Spatone.

Iron Supplement Drink : Spatone Apple

Does Spatone work?

I took Spatone for a week without any noticeable side effects as it usually happens with iron tablets. I do not know if Spatone has made any difference to my Hb levels but I did feel a little less exhausted than I normally do.

Spatone is expensive. But if you have iron deficiency and iron supplement tablets are not working for you, it is worth giving Spatone a try. You will find it on offer on Boots, Tesco or Amazon. But as with any supplements, please consult your GP before you start taking them.

Have any of you tried Spatone for longer durations? Did it work for you? Please let me know in the comments section below.

Puressentiel Muscles & Joints Roller

Happy Monday! Hope each one of you had a lovely weekend.

Featured today on the blog is a product from Puressentiel, one of Europe's leading aromatherapy brands. Even though Puressentiel had launched in the UK in late 2014, I had not heard of them until a few weeks back. The brands philosophy is to make aromatherapy accessible to everyone. Each one of their products is a pure concentrate of natural active ingredients.

Puressentiel products:
- are made with 100% natural active ingredients
- make use of pure and natural essential oils
- do not contain parabens, colourants, GMO, phenoxyethanol or synthetic fragrances
- are not tested on animals
- are validated by tests and studies led by independent authorized organisations

I have been using one of Puressentiel's products for some time now. It is the Puressentiel Muscles & Joints Roller (75ml, £14.99) which is an aromatherapy roller with 14 essential oils that help to take care of muscles before and after exercise as well as help to relax and soothe strained muscles. The essential oils used in the roller are said to possess anti-inflammatory, anti-stiffness, anti-swelling and analgesic properties and work together to reduce muscular tensions and stiffness.

Puressentiel Muscles & Joints Roller

My feedback on the Puressentiel Muscles & Joints Roller

I will begin with the fragrance. If you use pain-relieving topical products like I do, then you must be familiar with the strong fragrance such products come with. This roller is also similar. It has a strong medicinal scent (Eucalyptus and Menthol to be precise) that I quite like. I feel, scent plays an important part in relaxing you and also aids in pain relief. And this roller is spot-on with the fragrance.

Application is easy - use it just like you would use a deodorant roller. There is a cool, tingling sensation on application which turns to a very mild warmth in some time. There is 75ml of the product in the roller. Although it looks like a small sized product, it is sure to last a long time. I have noticed that I need to use only a little of the product each time I reach out to it. I have used it on stiff neck and shoulders (blame the long hours in front of a laptop) and it is effective. Also helps to ease stiffness in calves.

Note: Do not use it on broken or damaged skin as it can sting. This applies not just to this Puressentiel product but to all similar products from other brands as well.

Puressentiel Muscles & Joints Roller

Puressentiel Muscles & Joints Roller

I give this product a thumbs-up mainly for:
- The practicality : The roller is perfect for use when I am travelling or outdoors and would not like to use my hands to apply a pain-relieving cream/gel.
- The scent : I love the strong herbal fragrance.
- It is natural, effective and non-irritating.

You can buy this and other products from Puressentiel from Boots, Superdrug and some other independent pharmacies across the UK.

Ozeri WeightMaster II Digital Bathroom BMI Scale - Review

Early last year I had received and reviewed a few products from Ozeri and I loved them. The products were of excellent quality and are durable as I am still using them. So, when the team from Ozeri got in touch recently and asked if I would be interested in reviewing one of their new digital bathroom scales, I did not hesitate to take up the offer. And I am glad that I did.

The Ozeri WeightMaster II Digital Bathroom BMI Scale features BMI Measurement and Auto Recognition Technology allowing you to not only measure but also track your weight. The scale automatically turns on when you step on it and also has a unique colour alert feature that highlights your weight loss(in green) or weight gain(in red) thus provide you with a comprehensive understanding of your weight.

Apart from its well-thought of features, what I liked about these scales is the stylish design. The WeightMaster II comes in two colours - black or white and has a slip-resistant grooved(I love the texture) exterior with a tempered glass interior. As you can see from the pictures, the central part has clear glass. The scales are treated with Microban® antimicrobial product protection that reduces the growth of stain and odour-causing bacteria and thus helps to maintain surface cleanliness. 'Very impressive', said Mr.H considering he is more obsessed with cleanliness than me :) The overall design is quite sleek and stylish and scale scores well on appearance/design factor.

The scales are easy to set up and use. Simply step on the scale to turn it on. You can then use the Profile mode to create your profile. Your weight is calculated and you need to enter your height. BMI will then be calculated and the readings stored to your profile. The scales can store up to 8 unique users and 30 weights per user.

The Weight Master can be used either in the Basic Weighing mode(where it does not store your weight readings) or in the Memory Access mode, an excellent feature which allows you to look up your most recent weight or the average of your last 3/7/30 recorded weight. If you are using a digital scale with stored user profiles for the first time, you can read through the instruction manual which explains every little thing. Even if you are using it for the first time, the setup is very simple. It would take less than 5 minutes to set it up.

What to Expect During an MRI Scan?

What to Expect During a MRI Scan?
What to Expect During an MRI Scan?

In January my rheumatologist had ordered an MRI of my wrists and fingers because the X-rays did not show up enough data to reach a conclusive diagnosis. My blood tests for RA were negative but the external symptoms on my right hand pointed towards RA. Prior to the MRI, based on the other tests done, I had been diagnosed with Palindromic Rhuematism but the doctor wanted more detailed information to determine the best mode of treatment. And thus MRI came into picture. MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a kind of scan that makes use of very strong magnetic fields and radio frequency waves to produce detailed images of any part of the body.

I had never undergone an MRI earlier and was a little concerned mainly because I do not like small, closed spaces. I am not claustrophobic per say but the thought of lying inside the MRI scanner tube was not something I was looking forward to. On the day of the MRI, I reached the hospital half an hour prior to the scan. My right hand fingers were slightly swollen on that day and there was pain as well, so whatever it was, it would show up in the scan. I had to sign some forms and then was taken to the scanning room where the scanner was located.

First, I was handed earplugs because it tends to be very loud once the scanning begins. Then I was made to lie down on the MRI bed face down, with my left hand outstretched over my head and my right hand by the side. The left hand was arranged in position with foam cushions and some kind of belts. I was then handed a push-button which I was to use if I felt uncomfortable at any point during the scan. It was like a signal to the technician to stop. Thankfully I did not have to use this during the scan. The technician can see you and talk to you during the MRI. While you cannot see the technician, you can talk to them through the intercom. Once everything is ready, the techinician heads to the control room to operate the scanner. You are informed of every step of the scanning process prior to its commencement.

The first step was me being rolled into the MRI tube, head first, upto my waist. Since only my hands were being scanned I was not required to go completely inside the tube. Then the techinician announced that they were begining the scan and mentioned the duration of the scan. It was a series of loud bangs and clanking noises. Once it ended the next set of scans were done, all following the same procedure. Each set of scan had a different rhythm; some were very loud and some like a dull pounding. It took 45 minutes to do the scans for the left hand after which the technician came into the room and adjusted the right hand in position for the scan. The same procedure was repeated and it took another 45 minutes for the right hand scan.

MRI is a painless and safe scanning method. My extremities did become a bit cold but other than that I did not face any problem. I had to lie very still for 45 minutes at a stretch but that was not a problem either as I am not fidgety by nature. The radiographer mentioned at the end of the scan that I lay so still that they did not have to re-do any of the scans. During the scan, I opened my eyes once while inside the MRI tube and found the confined space a bit uncomfortable, so I immediately closed my eyes again and kept them closed throughout the scan.

At the end of the scan, I realised that I had been unneccesarily dreading the MRI. Based on my experience, here are a few pointers for those going for an MRI:
  • If you have implants or any other metal parts inside your body, MRI may not be for you. Please let your doctor know about this in advance.
  • Ensure that there are no metal bits on your clothing and that you are not wearing any jewellery or watch.
  • MRI is totally painless. There may be some temporary discomfort due to lying still in the same position for prolonged duration.
  • It tends to be a little cold in the scanning room. You can request for a blanket to cover yourself.
  • The scanner makes loud noises while it is in operation. The noise is dulled to a certain extent due to the ear plugs though.
  • If you have claustrophobia, talk to your radiographer. They will try to make the experience more comfortable for you.

If you have been advised an MRI and have any concerns, you can always call the hospital and talk to the staff at the Scanning department.

14-day Teatox Challenge

Detox teas have been quite popular on the blogosphere over the past few months. When I was given the chance to take a 14-day Slimming Solutions Teatox challenge, I took up the opportunity.

According to Slimming Solutions "Teatox works by combining a unique blend of unique tea formulas; a daytime plus an evening blend. These teas are designed to work in harmony with your body to help get rid of unwanted toxins, resulting in a full body detoxing effect. Made from a delicious blend of natural & herbal ingredients Teatox is designed to gently cleanse the digestive system and detoxify your body, as well as boosting metabolism and reducing cravings."

Teatox Slimming Solutions

As mentioned above there were two blends.

Daytime blend which is to be consumed in the morning soon after waking up. This one is basically a Chinese Oolong te a(known for health benefits because of its high levels of antioxidants) with some other herbal ingredients (list below) that help to wake/perk you up. You can flavour the tea with honey or lemon should you feel the need to. I, however, enjoyed the daytime tea as is. On the taste front it was just like any other Oolong tea.

Ingredients: Chinese Oolong tea (38%), Siberian Ginseng (20%), Fennel (10%), Lemongrass (10%), Nettle leaves (8%), Ginger root (5%), Dandelion leaf (5%), Ginseng root (2%), Salvia miltiorrhiza (2%). Naturally sugar free with no artificial additives.

Evening Blend which is to be consumed on alternate evenings around half an hour after you last meal, just before bed. I flavoured these with a slice of lemon as I was not very keen on the tea's taste.

Ingredients: Senna leaves (20%), Hawthorn leaves (20%), Lotus leaves (14%), Fenugreek seeds (12%), Burdock root (14%), Peppermint (8%), Psyllium seeds (8%), Valerian root (2%), Liquorice root (2%). Naturally sugar free with no artificial additives.

Now, if you look at the ingredients list for both the teas you will notice that they contain laxatives and diuretics. The idea here is to detox your body. Fennel is used for digestive problems and it is something that we consume at home in the seed form. Senna is a plant that is known for its use as a laxative. I had expected that I might be visiting the bathroom more often when I was on this 14-day teatox challenge. However, there was no change in the number of my bathroom visits. I did notice a slight diuretic effect but then I had upped my water intake as well to counter any dehydration. At the end of the 14 days, my weight was the same but I did feel a little less bloated. I think herbal detox teas work differently for different people. So, you may experience effects different from mine.

Note: As always what I write is based on my personal experience with the product. You may not necessarily experience the same. If you have any medical condition or are diabetic, then please do talk to your GP before going on any kind of detox.
