Rococo Chocolates - Organic Artisan Bars

Chocolate lovers, I am here today with another chocolate review. A brand that I only discovered recently - Rococo Chocolates. Rococo was started by Chantal Coady who wanted to share her love for chocolate with others. Since 1983 Rococo have been making delicious chocolates while supporting ethical trade for cocoa farmers. Rococo have a small cocoa farm in Northern Grenada called 'Grococo' and they have been using their own Grococo beans in all of their organic products. I was sent two variants to try out - Sea Salt Organic Milk Chocolate Artisan Bar and the Crystallised Ginger Organic Dark Chocolate Artisan Bar.

Let me start off by saying how much I liked the packaging. Both the chocolate bars were beautifully packed in Artisan wrappers. The wrapper designs have been inspired by the tiled Marococo garden in Rococo's Motcomb St store. With so much thought gone into the packaging, I was quite curious as to how the chocolates would taste.

The chocolates were smooth and delicious - the Sea Salt one with just the right amount of salt giving a lovely sweet+salt taste that instantly reminded me of Isle of Wight. When we had been to Isle of Wight it was quite windy and yet both me and Mr.H used to go for long walks on the beach and you could sort of taste the salt in the air :-) This Sea Salt chocolate transported me back to that time. The bar contains 37% milk chocolate and the addition of salt only intensifies the sweet creamy taste. It was so pleasant to eat that I could not stop at one bite. The whole bar was gone in a few minutes - good thing I took the pictures before I began the tasting :-) If you enjoy salty-sweetness then this bar is the one for you.

Made with 65% dark chocolate, the Crystallised Ginger bar actually contains tiny pieces of crystallised organic ginger in addition to a warming ginger essential oil. I have tried out other Ginger chocolates earlier but those included ground/pureed ginger. Rococo have taken it a notch higher with the addition of crystallised ginger - it adds so much to the texture of the chocolate. The dark chocolate flavour is retained and you also get the warmth from the ginger pieces with each bite.

Both these bars are priced at £4.50 for 70g. Rococo have an impressive range of chocolate bars and other confectionary.  They also conduct a variety of chocolate workshops, classes and tastings for adults and children from beginner to expert levels. You can find out more about Rococo Chocolates on their website - www.rococochocolates.com

Exquisite Luxury Chocolate Bars from Beech's Fine Chocolates

Beech's Fine Chocolates recently launched luxury chocolate bars in 6 flavours. Made with 100% natural ingredients, these chocolate bars are gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. The dark chocolates are even vegan friendly! I have tried some of Beech's products earlier and know that the quality of their chocolates is awesome; so I was understandably excited when the new range of chocolate bars came home for review purposes. The 6 flavours are: Milk, White, Dark, Anglesey Sea Salt, Natural Ginger and Lime & Chilli.

The chocolate bars come in trendy cardboard boxes. Each bar is 60g and in my opinion is the perfect size for sharing. All bars costs £1.50 each. The packaging is lovely. The colours and the designs used are a wonderful combination of classic and modern designs. I have always mentioned that the packaging of Beech's products is apt for the product and it is no different in the case of the new bars. They seem to pay as much attention to the packaging as they do to the actual product. I like this attention to every small detail. Packaging done, let us now move on to the main part - the taste.

The Taste Test

- Milk Chocolate: With 30% Cocoa Solids and natural Vanilla flavours, this milk chocolate bar was sweet and quite  rich in taste and texture. Mr.H loved this one. The smoothness and the depth of flavour was excellent and much better than most milk chocolate bars that Mr.H has tried.

- Anglesey Sea Salt Milk Chocolate: I have been favouring sea salted chocolates lately and no wonder that I reached out for this one first. It has the same smoothness and richness of flavour like the milk chocolate, but what takes it a notch higher is the addition of the grainy salt. It adds a wonderful texture and gives a nice sweet and salty taste which I love. This was my favourite of the lot.

- White Chocolate: Again this one was picked up by Mr.H and the verdict was out very soon. A high quality chocolate with a lovely taste and texture. When you take the first bite you are hit by the taste of pure and fresh milk(more like condensed milk) which is followed by a lovely vanilla taste. This one was the sweetest of the 6 bars and if you have serious sweet tooth, you will absolutely love this.

- Dark Chocolates: There are three bars in this category: Dark, Natural Ginger and Lime & Chilli. All three of them have 55% minimum cocoa solids base and like the dark chocolates that I have tasted from Beech's earlier these 3 also have a lovely sweetness devoid of excessive bitterness. The flavour and taste - both are rich. The Natural Ginger bar has a pleasant mildly spicy warmth to it. Mr.H felt it could have been a wee bit stronger in taste but enjoyed it nonetheless. The Lime & Chilli was an interesting combination. It surely would be an acquired taste as it is not something that I would eat normally. But the taste grows on you and you enjoy the lime flavour followed by the chilli kick both of which work surprisingly well with the dark chocolate.

Overall, this new range of chocolate bars from Beech's gets a happy thumbs up at DB Reviews. Whether it is the taste, texture, flavours or the packaging - everything is of a high quality that is synonymous with Beech's. I hope they add more flavours in the near future to this range of chocolate bars.

Sea Salt Banana Caramel Truffles from Charbonnel et Walker

Somebody once said - "Chocolate is the best when it melts so creamy and soft in your mouth that it slides down your throat." I totally agree with that. Chocolate is one of the best treats and a day without chocolate is like a day without sunshine. At home we enjoy our chocolates and at any point of time, there will be an assortment of treats to choose from. Earlier in the month, I had reviewed the Charbonnel et Walker Marc de Champagne Truffle Heart.  With a mix of white and milk chocolate and natural Strawberry flavouring, those truffles were delicious luxurious treats.

Charbonnel et Walker recently introduced a brand new addition to their best-selling truffle range - The Sea Salt Banana Caramel Truffles. Just the name sounds so indulgent and inviting, isn't it?

The Sea Salt Banana Caramel Truffles are made of delicious milk chocolate shells which enclose an irresistible blend of sweet liquid banana caramel infused with the finest sea salt. Yummy! The truffles are delicately dusted with icing sugar. Seriously, these are so tasty and moreish that you can't stop yourself from indulging. Everything is balanced and perfect. Like the jingle for some old advertisement goes - No one can eat just one :)

The truffles are handmade and placed in individual paper cups. They are presented in a round box with a bright yellow colour similar to ripe bananas. The Sea Salt Banana Caramel Truffles retail at £12.50 for 125g and can be purchased online at www.charbonnel.co.uk

Beech's Fine Chocolates - Turkish Delight

On Valentine's day a couple of boxes of Turkish Delight landed through my post box, courtesy of Beech's Fine Chocolates. The company which has been making traditional British chocolates since 1920 have a wonderful selection of chocolates to choose from. Beech's use only the finest raw materials and chocolate along with natural colours and flavours to make some really delicious treats.

Last month I had reviewed the Dark Chocolate Ginger which was a revelation to me. This time around it was Turkish Delight or Lokum as it is known traditionally in Turkey. As always the packaging of the product was so well thought of. The bright colours and the intricate designs all reflected a Persian feel. I like the attention to detail that Beech's show both in terms of the chocolates and the packaging as well.

Beech's Fine Chocolates Turkish Delight

Now moving onto the product itself. These have been tried and tested by Mr.H. I am not particularly fond of Turkish Delight. I had tried them on a couple of occasions earlier and they were not my kind of sweet treats. Mr. H has a very open mind. Whenever we travel to any country, he makes sure to sample their local cuisine and delicacies. He never shies away from trying something new or experimenting. And as you know he is a massive chocolate lover. So, to put it in short, he was more than happy to trial these.

Beech's Turkish Delights have a thick velvety milk chocolate layer enclosing the gorgeous rose flavoured centre. As per Mr. H, the centre was slightly firmer than other Turkish Delights that he has tried. The generous chocolate layer was 'melt in the mouth' kind giving a perfect blend of flavours in every mouthful. He enjoyed it. If you are a lover of Turkish Delights than you should try these.

You can browse through the entire Beech's range online. Beech's have also very kindly provided a discount code for the readers of DB Reviews. You can avail 10% off your purchases until 28th February 2014 from www.beechsfinechocolates.com. Use the code 'BFC21J1410' to get 10% off any purchases. Enjoy!! And let me know what you pick up from Beech's.

Marc de Champagne Truffle Heart from Charbonnel et Walker

Valentine's day is a day filled with romantic gestures, love, happiness and wonderful treats/gifts. One of the most loved and romantic gifts for Valentines Day is undoubtedly chocolates. Like Charles M.Schulz said - "All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” Chocolates have always been associated with love and romance and when it comes packed in a heart-shaped box, that makes it all the more attractive and exciting.

As a couple, myself and Mr.H really do not need a special day to celebrate togetherness, but if we really want to make it extra special then there is no better way to say it then with a box of luxury chocolates. And Charbonnel et Walker perfectly fits the bill. Charbonnel et Walker are one of Britain’s earliest chocolatiers. They were founded way back in 1875 and all their chocolates are hand-made according to traditional recipes. We tried out the Pink Marc de Champagne Truffle which comes in a beautiful heart-shaped box.

The pink chocolate truffles with a milk chocolate, butter and Marc de Champagne centre are finished with a light dusting of icing sugar. The truffles come beautifully packed in a gold-embossed heart-shaped box. I loved the colour of the box and the chocolates. With a mix of white chocolate, milk chocolate and natural Strawberry flavouring, these truffles are no ordinary truffles. One bite and you know how luxurious these are. The truffles contain Marc de Champagne and White Rum and are treats that need to be savoured not devoured. The flavour and fragrance are both delicious. The product and the packaging both exude luxury and high quality. These truffles from Charbonnel et Walker are sure to delight any recipient.  Perfect for Valentine's day.

Charbonnel et Walker also have loads of other Valentine's chocolate selection like the Truffle Kisses, Fine Dark Chocolate Selection, Mini Champagne & Truffle Set and Red Velvet Boite Rouge Box among others. You can browse the entire collection or  purchase the Pink Marc de Champagne Truffle Heart online at charbonnel.co.uk I am sure your Valentine will love and appreciate these chocolates for no other food symbolizes comfort, love, sensuality and luxury like chocolates do. Happy Valentines!!

ohso Chocolate Bars with Probiotics - Review

Blogging gives me the chance to discover and try out new things. Recently I came across a chocolate bar that not only satisfies your chocolate cravings but is also good for your health. Confused? Sceptical? Sounds too good to be true, isn't it? Well, the product in question is the ohso Chocolate Bar.

ohso chocolates are made from 53% Belgian dark chocolate and also contain probiotics. TO be precise each bar of chocolate contains 1 billion probiotic bacteria and has only 72 calories. The chocolates comes in 2 flavours - Dark and Orange.

According to ohso, their probiotic chocolate bars are 3 times more effective than most dairy drinks that contain 'friendly bacteria' at delivering the benefits of probiotics to your system. Each ohso bar contains around a billion Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria and according to research this is the optimum amount of friendly bacteria needed per day.

ohso chocolates are free from nuts, gluten, wheat, GM ingredients and contain no added dairy. These are suitable for vegetarians. Before I tried the bars, I was a bit unsure about the taste due to the addition of probiotics. Would it taste medicinal? Would it retain the taste of chocolate? One bite into the dark chocolate bar and all my apprehensions were put to rest. The chocolate tastes like chocolate :) Melts nicely in the mouth and the dark version was lovely. Mr.H loved the Orange flavour more as he not very keen on plain dark chocolate. The bars are quite tiny - around 13gms each. But the size is perfect as a treat. I like the fact that it is made of tiny sections as this gives me the feeling that I am eating a proper full size treat and also allows me to enjoy the chocolate more slowly, snapping each section individually :)

Priced at £3.99 for a 7 day pack, it seems a bit expensive but if you are taking probiotics, then you can consider trying this one out because like I mentioned earlier ohso probiotic chocolate bars are 3 times more effective than most dairy drinks that contain 'friendly bacteria'. You can read more about ohso and purchase the bars from the ohso website.

Beech's Dark Chocolates with Stem Ginger Centre - Review

I have been blogging for around 5 years now and blogging has its perks, which I am very thankful for. When you blog, you need to have an open mind, be willing to experiment and try out new things. Over the past year as I have been trying out new food products, I have had some amazing experiences, some failures and some lovely discoveries as well - experimented with things which I would probably have not tried out on my own. For example, the product that I am going to talk about today - Beech's Dark Chocolates with Stem Ginger Centre. I like Ginger. I enjoy ginger infused drinks, ginger chews, ginger bread and ginger in my curries. And I love chocolate. But the combination of Ginger and Chocolate was something that I had never tried before. So, when I received these goodies from Beech's, I wasn't sure how my taste buds would respond to this combination.

Having recently reviewed Beech's Luxury Brazils, one thing I was sure was that the quality of the product would be good. After all Beech's Fine Chocolates have been in the business of making traditional British chocolates since 1920 and they use only the finest raw materials and chocolate along with natural colours and flavours.

The packaging of the product is simple. The colours and concept reflects an Eastern influence which is apt considering the product contains Chinese Stem Ginger. The ginger centre is enclosed in a generous, rich dark chocolate layer. The combination of ground stem ginger and dark chocolate makes this a wonderful treat for adults I feel. The ginger taste was not overpowering as I had imagined and dreaded. Instead it was more of a subtle comforting ginger kick perfectly balanced by the dark chocolate. Both myself and Mr. H loved it. I particularly liked the warming aftertaste. Like I mentioned earlier in the post, one needs to have an open mind and try out new stuff to make wonderful discoveries like these Dark Chocolate Gingers from Beech's.

The Dark Chocolate Ginger's are available in two sizes: 100g(£3.49) and 200g(£6.49) and can be ordered online from Beech's. Beech's offer free first class delivery on all orders over £12.00. If you enjoy fine chocolate and love experimenting, then do check out Beech's website for an amazing range of traditional English Chocolates.

Prestat Sea Salt Caramel Truffles

The Sea Salt Caramel Truffles from Prestat are described as 'grown up truffles'. The caramel centre is held in a 70% cocoa chocolate truffle shell which is dusted with fine cocoa powder. Prestat, established in 1902, are one of London's oldest chocolate shops and you can find their products in leading stores like Harrods, Selfridges and many fine food shops throughout UK.

I have a soft spot for truffles and so when I was sent the Sea Salt Caramel Truffles, I was excited to say the least. The box that the truffles come in, is itself so beautiful. I loved the colour combination and the design. The box contains bite size truffles that looked lovely and I had to resist trying them out before I had them photographed them :) After the photography session, as I bit down through the dark chocolate shell, the caramel came flooding into my mouth. It was not overly sweet or overpowering. The sweetness was balanced well with the bitterness of the dark chocolate but I felt that the taste of salt could have been a little more prominent. If the caramel was a wee bit more salty, I would have given it full marks. But nonetheless, they are lovely treats and I could not put the box down once I started tasting them.

Priced at £11.00 for 175g, you can purchase these truffles online at: prestat.co.uk

Do you love truffles? Have you tried Prestat truffles? Which one is your favourite?

Beech's Fine Chocolates: Flavoursome Whole Brazil Nuts Enrobed in Thick Luxurious Chocolate

Beech's Fine Chocolates, based in Preston(Lancashire), have been in the business of making traditional British chocolates since 1920. Using only the finest raw materials and chocolate along with natural colours and flavours, Beech's not only make chocolates under their own brand but also for a few selected “own label” brands for quality retailers.

The past week I received some yummy goodies from Beech's - the Chocolate Brazil Nuts(milk and dark chocolate versions). The milk chocolate brazils come in an elegant blue box while the dark chocolate ones come in a similarly packaged red box. The packaging though simple looks classy.

Coming to the chocolates - Let me begin by saying that we just loved these. Mr.H loves milk chocolates while I prefer the darker one. The milk chocolate was creamy and 'melt-in-the-mouth' kind. What a lovely texture and taste. The dark chocolate was yummylicious without being too bitter. It was perfect. I was happy at the thick coating of chocolate on each nut. In spite of the thick layer of the chocolate the brazil nuts were crisp and full of flavour. The quality is excellent and it is no wonder that these are termed as luxury chocolates. I would recommend these Brazil Nut Chocolates if you are a nutty chocoholic.

The Chocolate Brazil Nuts come in many sizes: 90g(£2.99), 140g(£3.99), 260g(£5.99) and in a large 1700g box(£33.83). I think that a box of chocolates(like this one) as a gift would be welcomed by most of us. Beech's have an impressive range to choose from online: special occasion chocolates, after dinner chocolates, traditional English chocolates and so much more. Visit their website to check out the entire collection.

Monster Sweets: Online Store for American Sweets and European Chocolates

Both Mr.H and myself are chocolate lovers and love trying out new varieties. Whenever and where ever we travel we make it a point to try out local brands. We sampled some awesome sweet treats in Belgium and Switzerland and I had packed a box full of chocolates to get back home. Obviously, they did not last long :)

I recently stumbled upon Monster Sweets, an online store, that supplies American sweets and European chocolates right to your door. They stock brands like Hershey's, Jolly Rancher Candy, Mars, Reese's, Wonka, Ritter Sport, Lindt, Nestle and Twizzler's and many more. Understandably I was excited when Monster Sweets sent me some goodies to sample. Here is what I received.

Ritter Sport are square chocolate bars that come with many different fillings and flavours. The ones in my pack were the Yogurt and Peppermint ones. Mr.H enjoyed these.

My favourite was the Ferrero Hanuta Hazelnut Chocolate wafer sandwich. If you are a chocolate lover, you will LOVE this. The rich hazelnut chocolate with tiny hazelnut pieces was absolutely divine. I will be getting more of these.

If you are looking for European and American chocolates and sweets, then Monster Sweets is the place. They have an amazing product range, the shopping and delivery process is quick and the treats are affordable. If you are in Liverpool, then delivery is free. Postage costs are reasonable for other parts too. I would recommend you to take a look at Monster Sweets for those hard to find European and American chocolates.

What would you pick up from Monster Sweets?
