Gtech is a name I only recently heard of. Gtech (Grey Technology) was founded in 2001 by Nick Grey and they developed the world's first cordless power sweeper in 2002. Since then they have developed and launched a number of cordless floor-care and garden products.

We recently got the chance to test Gtech's latest offering - the AirRam MK2, a high performance cordless vacuum cleaner.

What’s in the box

Included in the box are the main head, an upper handle, a lower handle, battery and charger, bin & filter and a brush bar hole plug.

The filter, bin and the battery are already in place within the main head. All you need to do to assemble the AirRam is insert the lower handle onto the main head and the upper handle into the lower handle until it clicks in place. Press the power button and your AirRam is ready to use. As simple as that!

Ease of use

The key feature of the Gtech AirRam is its ease of use. Our old vacuum is a pull-along model that is heavy and difficult to manoeuvre, especially in tight spaces. I hate lugging it around from room to room. When the Gtech AirRam arrived, I was surprised by how lightweight it was (I can easily lift it with one hand). And it is also very easy to manoeuvre. The fact that it is cordless makes it even more impressive.

Let's take a closer look at the key features of the Gtech AirRam MK2.

Simple operation

Like I mentioned earlier, the AirRam is very easy to use. There is just one foot operated switch to power on/off the vacuum cleaner. There are no different settings for different floor types. So, once the AirRam is powered on, you can move from hard floor to carpets or vice-versa without having to worry about settings to change. There is a button mechanism that locks and unlocks the handle. You can extend the upper handle for extended reach. The AirRam has an ultra-low profile and this allows you to reach even under chairs and tables.

Lightweight

One of the best features of the AirRam is its lightweight design. It weighs just 3.5kg! I was impressed. So easy to carry it around from one room to the other or up and down the stairs.

AirLOC technology

AirRam uses Gtech’s patented AirLOC system which means that it not only picks up dust and fine debris but also larger objects. It also effectively picks up dirt from awkward corners and crevices. Mr.H put the AirRam to a thorough test and he was pleased with the results. It picked up even tiny pieces from corners. You can watch this video to learn more about how the AirRam MK2 works.

Charging and long run-time

AirRam’s power comes from a professional grade 22V Lithium-ion battery. The vacuum cleaner takes around 4 hours to charge completely and that gives you around 40 minutes of run time. There is a 4-stage LED display that indicates how much charge is left in the battery.

Emptying the bin and cleaning

Emptying the bin of the AirRam is much less messier than I had expected. All you need to do is, lift the bin out of the main head, release a latch, hold it over a rubbish bin and push a lever. The compressed bale of dirt is ejected out.

Cleaning is also easy - you need to remove the filter and wash it under a tap. Let it dry and then reinsert it into the AirRam. This needs to be done once a month. You will find detailed pictorial instructions in the operating manual.

The Verdict

Overall we have been very impressed with the Gtech AirRam. The winning points are its lightweight, cordless design along with its ability to pick up both fine dirt and larger pieces of rubbish. AirRam is easy to operate, doesn't need much maintenance and comes with 2 years warranty.

Prior to trying out the Gtech AirRam, we were of the opinion that the cordless model would not match a standard corded model in terms of performance. But we were wrong. The Gtech AirRam is a very well made product and much better than our previous vacuum cleaner. We have no hesitation in recommending the AirRam MK2.

  1. I was interested to read your review & thank you for sharing it as I've been talking to my other half about buying one. It sounds so much better than our regular vacuum in that it is powerful and lightweight :)

  2. I have the original AirRam, and love it, am tempted to get this one too and donate my original one to my son - love that the dirt collector is a bit easier to empty as that is the only thing that is a bit of a pain

    1. I haven't used the original one to compare the two but yes, the dirt collector is very easy to empty. And it is mess free too.

    1. The Gtech AirRam K9 has been designed to clean a wide variety of floor surfaces without the need to change settings. However some surfaces such as delicate loose-pile rugs or carpets, tasselled rug edges or damaged carpets with exposed threads are not suitable for cleaning with a rotary brush. The AirRam K9 can still be used to clean such surfaces by removing the brush bar as shown on page 11 (of the instruction manual) and using the supplied plug in the brush bar hole.
