My RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) has been mostly under control for the last one year although there have been flares once in a while. The flares though temporary are highly troublesome as the inflammation and pain makes even simple tasks quite difficult to achieve. During the worst of flares, I find even holding a toothbrush or spoon extremely difficult. Milder flares have struggles like difficulty opening jars, unable to get a good grip on things, pain while chopping vegetables, dropping things and so on. Since being diagnosed with RA I have made a lot of changes in the kitchen so that it is now set up in such a way that it works best for me. I have looked up and purchased some kitchen tools and gadgets that can make simple kitchen chores less daunting when I have painful finger joints. Jar and bottle openers, utensils with ergonomic rubber handles etc. have made things a little bit easier for me.
I recently received two very useful products from OXO:

- Good Grips Two-Fold Grater
The chopper (£19.00) has proved to be a very useful addition to my kitchen. My fingers are affected by RA and chopping using a knife puts stress on my weak and painful finger joints. This chopper from OXO has simplified the task. It is very efficient in chopping onions and other vegetables like carrots, potato and cucumber. Using the chopper is very easy - fill the clear cup with the vegetable or herb you want to chop. Replace the chopper body on to the cup. Press the black knob repeatedly. When you press down on the soft knob, it rotates the blades for easy chopping. You can also chop directly on a chopping board which is what I usually do. The chopper doesn't hurt my finger joints but it does ensure that my hands get some exercise.
The two-fold grater(£14.00) is another amazing product from OXO. It can be used upright on a cutting board or any other flat surface, or you could angle it to rest inside a bowl. There are two grating surfaces - coarse grating for semi-soft cheeses, butter etc. and a medium grating surface for vegetables, hard cheeses etc. The grater can be easily dis-assembled for easy cleaning and easy storage. The best part is the soft, comfortable handle and the non-slip base which makes it very ergonomic and pleasant to use. It is definitely much easier to hold than a traditional grater and I find that it puts less strain on my wrists.
Both these kitchen tools are ergonomic, easy to use, easy to clean and assist in common kitchen tasks. The strain on my finger joints is less and that makes cooking more enjoyable for me.
