Gusto Cola : Fairtrade and Organic Cola

May saw the launch of Gusto Cola, Europe's first organic, Fairtrade and low calorie cola developed by Craig Sams, founder of Green and Blacks chocolate.

With so many cola brands in the market, what makes Gusto Cola stand out? Well, it is the fine ingredients (botanicals and spices) that are used in Gusto Cola.

What goes into Gusto Cola?

Gusto Cola makes use of organic ingredients including Fairtrade Madagascan vanilla extract, Neroli, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Coriander essential oils, organic lemon juice and the African cola nut. The Cola nut imparts an unique bitter flavour to counter-balance the sweet and citric notes and is a source of Theobromine that is known to lower blood pressure. Each can has just 49 calories and the drink is sweetened with a combination of organic cane sugar, organic agave inulin and calorie-free stevia leaf extract.

Gusto Cola does not make use of:

- Artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Aceslulfame-K, Sucralose and Saccharin.
- Phosphoric acid which is used in regular colas to provide acidity and which has now been shown to lead to osteoporosis. Gusto has replaced Phosphoric acid with organic lemon juice.

The Taste Test

So, how does Gusto Cola fare in terms of taste and quality?

The drink has a lovely 'cola' colour, is fizzy and has a very distinct 'cola' flavour. The sweetness tastes very natural and I could not discern any unpleasant after-taste. There was a very slight hint of spiciness due to presence of Cinnamon and Nutmeg which I loved. With a natural cola taste and with only 49 calories per can, I can see myself reaching out to Gusto Cola often. If you are a cola lover, you should give this natural organic cola a try.

Where to buy: Gusto Cola is available from Ocado. RRP £1.19 for a 335ml can.
