People often get confused between dry mouth and thirst. These are two different things. When you are dehydrated because of low water intake you feel thirsty. Once you quench your thirst, you usually feel better. There are certain medical conditions that do make you persistently and excessively thirsty in which case you should consult your doctor. Dry mouth on the other hand is when your mouth literally goes dry. Due to reduced saliva production you feel that your mouth is very dry and parched. It can cause discomfort and also bad breath. Dry mouth usually affects the elderly but anyone can experience dry mouth at any age. Dry mouth can be caused by any of the following:
- certain medical conditions
- as side effects of certain medicines/medical treatments
- due to excessive dehydration
- certain lifestyle habits(smoking, breathing through the mouth etc.)

There are a lot of simple steps you can take to combat dry mouth. Drinking water is the simplest and easiest thing you can do. Breathe through your nose and not your mouth, if you tend to do so. There are also many OTC products available to help reduce dry mouth condition like - mouth sprays, gels, mouth rinses, gums and lozenges.

I sometimes suffer from dry mouth; usually when I take first-generation antihistamines. While I prefer second-generation antihistamines like cetirizine for regular use, I do take first-generation antihistamines, at times, especially if the allergy has kept me awake during the night. Each time it makes my mouth go dry and I up my water intake, sipping water frequently to combat the dryness.

Recently I was sent some breath care products from The Breath Company(best-sellers in the US and recently arrived in the UK) and one of them was the Mouth Wetting Dry Mouth Lozenges.

The Breath Co. Mouth Wetting Dry Mouth Lozenges are said to help relieve dry mouth symptoms when used as directed. They are also effective in eliminating bad breath including strong food odours such as garlic and onion and smoker's breath. These lozenges contain natural active ingredients derived from exotic tropical plants that restore healthy mouth moisture instantly. The lozenges are recommended by doctors/dentists to patients that suffer from dry mouth due to age, medication, illness or any personal habits.

So, what do I think of these lozenges? Well, these are by far the best mint lozenges I have tried. First up - it does exactly what it claims. It instantly increases the amount of saliva in the mouth making it wetter. Bye bye, dry mouth! Second comes the taste - it's fresh, strong, very minty and freshens breath. The flavour is awesome. If you like strong mints, you will love these lozenges. And I give it bonus points for being individually wrapped. I now always carry a few along with me to keep my breath fresh and to combat dry mouth.

I have no hesitation in recommending these minty lozenges - it helps with dry mouth and is perfect for freshening your breath too. Normally priced at £8.99 for a box of 72 lozenges, it is currently available on Boots for £5.99.

Note: Please note that these lozenges are not medicine. If you have excessively dry mouth and are consistently feeling thirsty and/or tired or have any other concerns please consult your GP.
